Health Care Reform: Repeal Vote Announced, Democrats Vow To Block

As per their promises on the campaign trail, the Republicans have set thee wheels in motion for the repeal of the Health Care Reform Law. The incoming House Majority Leader, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), said Monday, that the vote will take place on Jan. 12, one week after Republicans take control of the Lower Chamber. Naturally, Republicans have named the bill “Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act.”

Just Like The Name Says

The ultimate purpose of the bill that has been introduced is described in the bill as “To repeal the job-killing health care law and health care-related provisions in the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.” Of course, the Senate is unlikely to join in the repeal, but if the Senate votes it down, the House can just keep resending it. In the meantime, it has been hinted that the House will vote to defund ObamaCare, and while that’s not perfect strategy for them, it is a start.

Democratic Response

Describing the repeal measure as irresponsible and reckless, top Democrats wrote a letter that stated, “If House Republicans move forward with a repeal of the health care law that threatens consumer benefits like the “donut hole” fix, we will block it in the Senate. This proposal deserves a chance to work. It is too important to be treated as collateral damage in a partisan mission to repeal health care.” Pelosi and other Democratic leaders are planning to hold a press conference today to tout their priorities in the new Congress.

There Is Compromise…Somewhere

Meanwhile, Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) is urging his colleagues to offer amendments to the repeal bill that would protect popular elements of the healthcare law, like a ban on insurance companies denying benefits because of pre-existing conditions. The health care law also faces a threat from the courts, as a Republican-appointed judge recently ruled its individual mandate unconstitutional. The case is said to be likely to reach the Supreme Court.
