First Steps into Laser Engraving
Woodworking has been a passion of mine for most of my adult life. Over the years, my interest only grew, especially after purchasing a CNC machine, which opened up a whole new realm of possibilities. While working on various projects, I began to notice opportunities where a laser could add a unique touch, enhancing the overall design and detail of my work.
Initially, I started with a basic 5W Ortur laser to experiment with engraving, but it quickly became clear that it wasn't powerful enough to meet my needs. That’s when a friend recommended I check out AtomStack. After some research, I decided to invest in the AtomStack X20 Pro with the extension kit, and it was a game-changer. About a year later, I found myself wanting even more cutting capabilities. I was considering a CO2 laser, but then AtomStack introduced the A70 max, which offered CO2-like capabilities at a much more affordable price point. Naturally, I had to get my hands on it.
Evolution with AtomStack A70 Max Laser Cutter
My initial projects were quite simple. I started by engraving my logo into my CNC carvings and experimented with engraving slate coasters, Christmas crafts, and some wall art. These projects were a great way to get familiar with the laser and its capabilities.
However, it was with the A70 Max that I really began to explore more ambitious ideas. One of my current projects is a U.S. National Parks map, designed to track the parks visited. The map is about 16x24 inches, but with the flexibility of the laser, it could be scaled even larger.
Challenges, Support and Possibilities from AtomStack
Of course, just like with anything new, there was a learning curve, especially with the added safety considerations that come with using a laser. I’m currently in the process of building an enclosure for the A70 Max to manage the smoke and fumes it produces. Proper ventilation is crucial, and the AtomStack Facebook group has been incredibly helpful in guiding the design of the enclosure and setting up the best airflow system. Another challenge I faced was creating a large enough workspace for the A70 Max. I needed a table measuring 51" x 49", which required careful planning before making the purchase.
Experimenting with different materials and settings was essential in getting comfortable with the laser. I also found a wealth of resources on YouTube and within the AtomStack Facebook group, which provided valuable insights and tips that helped me overcome the challenges I faced.
Overall, using the AtomStack laser has been a rewarding experience. It has expanded my creative possibilities and allowed me to take on projects that I once thought were out of reach. The journey has been full of learning, but the results have been more than worth it.
