Editor's Note:
Among the standout entries in the #MarkAtomStack challenge is the creatively recognized "AtomStack Hurricane Pet Edition," a playful, desk-sized homage to the powerful AtomStack Hurricane CO2 Laser Cutter. This model captures the essence of the full-sized Hurricane with precision-cut, movable parts that bring the iconic design to life. Crafted from laser-cut MDF, it includes engraved AtomStack logos and meticulously designed details, highlighting the creator’s ingenuity in building an entirely new model from scratch in LightBurn.
Adding a whimsical, hands-on element to any workspace, the Hurricane Pet Edition is perfect for those looking for a creative and interactive addition to their design sessions.
Below are the project details and story, as shared by the maker.
Project Details
It's a handy version of the actual Hurricane I aim to win. It is small enough to put it on your desk and pet it for relaxing moments during long model design sessions. The x-gantry and the laser head are completely movable, so you can have fun pretending to have a real AtomStack Hurricane.
I thought, instead of just remixing some stuff and slapping on an AtomStack logo, I designed a completely new model.
After the first idea, I used all my spatial imagination to design it entirely in LightBurn (2d rules!).
The model mostly consists of laser-cut 3mm MDF but also has one or two printed parts (the handle is printed, the cutting bed can be printed or cut). It has an engraved AtomStack logo on the top and laser-cut cardboard details on the front and a cut AtomStack logo on the laser head, looking just like the original.
I chose to not paint it, so that it looks more ecological - green-washing FTW - but you may paint it black like the original or just in every fancy color you like.
I hope that you are having fun building this model.
Project Story
I started with pencil and paper to help me brainstorming. Then I used my GAOMON 2200 graphics tablet with the newest version of Krita to refine the sketches.
Then I turned to LightBurn and began drawing all the parts for the model. I put all the parts in a "work sheet", so I could always check if they'll fit together. I also used my "work sheet" to design the hinges for the lid, which were especially challenging.
After every part was finished I cut them with my selfbuild and self designed laserecutter that has a 10W head. It's delicate design can be seen in the pictures in the PDF and with 200mm/min it took a lot of time to cut. The lasercutter is based on GRBL and I used LaserGRBL to process the SVGs.
The 3D parts where created in OpenSCAD, sliced with Cura and printed on a Creality Ender 3v2.
Now to the "why" behind the Pet Edition Hurricane...
I saw the existing entries and it appeared to me, that most of the others took some random preexisting model like mobile stands, keychains, cars and just added your logo on, with a minimum effort attitude...
So I thought, that I have to create something new with a strong AtomStack relation to stick out from the mass.
Reading the challenge rules and possible prizes I decided to create a "working" model of the hurricane, because even with the 50% coupon I couldn't possibly affort the real thing.
So I and others would at least have a Pet Version to play with... and also I thought it would be quite fun for you guys to see the slik design of the original turned into a cute toy :D.
I wanted to prove, to myself that I am able to create such a complex model in my freetime in a very short timeframe and I was very happy, that everything fit and worked as planned :).
