How to Resolve Windows Update Issues Preventing Lightburn/LaserGRBL from Connecting to Atomstack Laser Engraver?

Recently, many users have reported that they are unable to connect their Atomstack laser engravers to Lightburn or LaserGRBL software. After analysis, it appears that a recent Windows update may have caused the issue, potentially related to driver updates, leading to connection failures or instability. Below are the steps we recommend to help resolve this problem and get you back up and running as quickly as possible.

1. Why is the connection failing?

Windows has recently updated several drivers, which may affect the communication between your laser engraver and Lightburn or LaserGRBL software. Specifically, updates to the USB serial driver (CH340) can result in the system failing to properly recognize the device or causing connection disruptions.

2. How to check if your driver has been updated?

Follow these steps to check whether your driver has been updated:

  1. Open Device Manager: In Windows, press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Locate the CH340 device: In Device Manager, expand the Ports (COM & LPT) section and find your CH340
  3. Check the driver version: Right-click on the CH340 device, select Properties, and then go to the DriverHere, you can view the Driver Version and Driver Date.
  • a.If the driver version is January 30, 2019 and the device still doesn’t connect, please contact us via the details at the end of this article.
  • b.If the driver version is newer: This may be the cause of the connection issue. Please continue with the following steps to resolve it.

3. What to do if the driver has been updated?

For Lightburn Users:

If you are using Lightburn and have encountered connection issues after a driver update, try the following steps:

  1. Open Device Settings in Lightburn.
  2. Find the option Enable DTR signal and enable it.
  3. After enabling the setting, try reconnecting your laser engraver.

For LaserGRBL Users:

Currently, LaserGRBL users need to install an older version of the driver to restore normal functionality. You can download the older version of the driver by clicking here.

Once downloaded and installed, reconnect the device. If LaserGRBL releases an update in the future, we will continue to monitor the situation and update the instructions accordingly.

For AtomStack Studio Users:

If you are using AtomStack Studio, Windows driver updates will not affect your usage. You can continue to use the software and operate your device without any further adjustments.
